Slinky 101: Life Hack
By: Brian Puckett, Vice Chairman Helena Beautification Board

Squirrel!!! No, I am not being Dug, the Golden Retriever, from the movie UP! Those are the fluffy tailed rat-like creatures attacking my birdfeeder. Whether you have a garden or not, you more than likely have a bird feeder hanging somewhere around your house and are sick and tired of going through tons of bird seed for squirrels.
If the above is you or someone you know, do I ever have a solution for you. A few years ago, my Mom taught me a trick to keep the squirrels away from the precious bird seed. At first I was hesitant… It sounded way too easy, but it actually works.
A slinky! Yes, you read that correctly, a slinky is more than just America’s favorite walking spring toy. It’s also a really easy and funny way to keep your birdfeeder squirrel free. By simply putting a slinky on the pole holding your birdfeeder you are able to keep squirrels away and have entertainment of watching them get sprung back down to the ground.
So run out and buy your $5.00 slinky to protect your seeds, and be sure to thank my Mom for this awesome and easy life hack.
