Vegetables in a Tight Space
By: Brian Puckett, Vice Chairman Helena Beautification Board

Whether you are wanting fresh vegetables for yourself or wanting a way to get your kids involved in gardening; growing your own vegetables can be the way to go.
We hear time and time again that kids quickly loose interest in planting flowers due to short lifecycle of engagement needed. Planting vegetables is a great way to solve that problem. When growing a vegetable plant, the process continues to be interactive from the planting to watering to picking the fruits of the labor.
Now, if you are thinking “I don’t want to till up my yard” or have the space for a raised bed; there are options. A couple products that we have used for the smaller areas is the Earth Box planter and the Victory8 CuBe. Both are great products that feature different benefits. With the Earth Box there is a built in water reservoir that sure helps during the Alabama summer and can be reused season after season. This product is slightly bigger but still great for a patio. The Victory8 CuBe is just that, a 1-foot by 1-foot cube. Made of fabric, air is able to penetrate the side to get air into the root systems.
No matter the time of year in Alabama there are vegetables that can be grown. The process is extremely easy to do in a container. Decide what vegetables you want to plant now and get to growing!
